About MS

What is MS?
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disorder of the central nervous system which includes the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. It gets it's name from multiple areas of scarring (sclerosis), scattered throughout these areas.
  • MS usually appears between the ages of 20 and 50 with a peak in the early 30s.
  • Women are 3 times more likely to get MS than men.
  • For men with MS, suicide is the main cause of death. Support is vital
  • The cause of MS is still unknown. Researchers around the world continue to seek a cure.
  • In July 2015, the New Zealand Multiple Sclerosis Research Trust was established, to stimulate, co-ordinate and support specific New Zealand-based research into the cause, prevention, treatment, alleviation and cure of MS

The Multiple Sclerosis Society of New Zealand (Inc) is a non-profit organisation formed to provide on-going support, education and advocacy for people with MS and their support networks.  It also aims to educate the general public, employers and health professionals about MS and actively funds key research into the condition
